1st v Lytham (A) Match report 29-7-17

Matt Glayzer won the toss for Ormskirk and elected to bat. Andy Baybutt and Michael Jones opened the innings but unfortunately things did not follow the usual pattern of establishing a strong opening partnership when Michael (0) was trapped lbw by the first ball he faced. It was an inauspicious start, with one wicket down and only one run on the board, but there was still plenty of batting to come.

The loss of Michael’s wicket brought in Josh Bohannon to join Andy and the score progressed to 32 when Josh (8) was out to a catch. His loss was serious but not fatal because there was still plenty of batting to come. At such an early stage there was no need for panic.

John Armstrong joined Andy and 57 runs were added when Andy (44) offered a catch that was snapped up to see him making his way back to the pavilion to be replaced by Gary Knight.

John and Gary took charge of the situation and put on a strong partnership of 44 runs before John who had continued his recent good form was caught having scored an excellent 54 runs to include seven 4s and one 6. The next partnership between Gary and Matt Glayzer was not so fruitful. Gary went after scoring 33 excellent runs only quickly to be followed by Matt who had faced nine deliveries when he was caught without scoring to leave the score on 154-6. More trouble followed when Alex Rankin was run out with only two further runs being added.

It was now down to Simon Kerrigan and Nicky Caunce to retrieve a somewhat worrying interlude and they did it in style. They both remained calm and added 41 extremely valuable runs. Simon was bowled when on 27 and Nicky was caught after registering 24 runs.

When the score reached 204-9 the innings was declared.

Scott Lees and Nicky Caunce opened the bowling and both soon met with success. With only 12 runs on the board they had grabbed the wickets of the two openers Taylor Cornall (7) and Anthony Mulligan (5). Both went to catches, as did the next two wickets that fell to the bowling of Josh Bohannon who had come on as the first change bowler. He managed to break a stubborn 40 run partnership that had developed for the third wicket and cemented that success by taking the fourth wicket without a run being added. After Josh’s intervention Lytham were now 61-4 and were faced with the task of coping with an ‘on fire’ Josh Bohannon at one end Simon Kerrigan at the other. With the exception of county player Toby Lester (21*) they failed to cope and wickets tumbled in quick succession. Before they knew it they were 70-8.

From then on it was a formality and in the 37th over the last wicket fell with the score on 101 and victory to Ormskirk by a margin of 103 runs.

It was a good all round performance with outstanding contributions by top scorer John Armstrong (53) with the bat and leading wicket taker Josh Bohannon (9-4-21-5) together with the fielders who secured six of the ten Lytham wickets with catches. With the 24 points secured from the victory Ormskirk remain firmly placed at the top of the table by a margin of 77 points.
